Vaccinations

It is vitally important to get your puppies
and kittens vaccinated properly!

There are many
diseases out there that can be serious,
even fatal, if contracted
.

Both puppies and kittens need to be evaluated by the Veterinarian and started on their vaccinations when they turn
eight weeks old.  Vaccination is a complex issue, and often vaccination programs are decided on an individual basis for each puppy or kitten.  However, in general terms, puppies and kittens should be vaccinated every 3 to 4 weeks until they turn 16 weeks old.  We can discuss the details during your visit.

You don't buy DPT vaccines for your children at Wal-Mart.

Vaccination is a complex issue.  A quality vaccine must be used in order to get a good immune response.  The vaccine must be stored and handled properly, the vaccine must be administered correctly, and the patient must be healthy in order to respond to the vaccine.   It is not just a matter of sticking the needle in.  There are lots of good reasons to have your puppy or kitten vaccinated by a veterinarian, and I'll list them below.

One year, during a Parvo outbreak, I kept records of the animals we treated here at Sunnyside Veterinary Clinic.  In one spring, we treated 6 puppies who had never been vaccinated at all, 5 puppies who had been owner-vaccinated with vaccines bought at one particluar store, 1 puppy who had been owner-vaccinated with vaccine from a different store, and no puppies who had been vaccinated by a veterinarian.  You can draw your own conclusions from this data.

Have your puppy or kitten's vaccinations administered by a professional
